EV Charger Installation: What You Need to Know Before Going Electric

More households and businesses across the Mid North Coast are making the switch to electric vehicles, and one of the first questions that comes up is: what does it actually take to charge one at home? The short answer is that you can plug most EVs into a regular power point — but the longer answer is that doing it properly makes a real difference to charging speed, safety, and the long-term cost of running an EV. Here's what's worth knowing.

Do You Actually Need a Dedicated EV Charger?

Technically, no — most electric vehicles come with a portable charging cable that plugs into a standard household power point. But this is the slowest way to charge, often adding only 10-15km of range per hour. For a car used daily, that's rarely enough to fully replenish overnight, and it puts sustained load on a circuit that wasn't designed for hours of continuous high draw.

A dedicated EV charger (often called an "EVSE" — electric vehicle supply equipment) changes that picture substantially, charging several times faster and doing it safely on a circuit built for the job.

Charger Types: What's the Difference?

  • Level 1 (standard power point) — Slowest option, uses your existing 10A or 15A circuit. Fine for occasional top-ups, not ideal as a daily solution.

  • Level 2 (dedicated home charger, single or three-phase) — The most common home upgrade. Typically installed on a 32A circuit, delivering charging speeds of roughly 7kW (single-phase) up to 22kW (three-phase, if your property has three-phase power). This can take an EV from empty to full overnight, or add substantial range in just a few hours.

  • DC fast charging — Public charging network territory, not a realistic or necessary home installation due to cost and infrastructure requirements.

For most homes, a Level 2 charger is the sweet spot between cost and practicality.

What's Involved in Installing a Home EV Charger

Every property is a little different, but the general process looks like:

  1. Assess your switchboard and supply capacity — Does your existing switchboard have room for a new circuit, and can your supply handle the additional load without upgrading?

  2. Determine the right charger and circuit size — Based on your vehicle, your usage patterns, and whether you have single or three-phase power

  3. Run a dedicated circuit from the switchboard to the charger location, sized correctly for the charger's output

  4. Install the charger unit, whether wall-mounted in a garage or on a stand for driveway parking

  5. Test and certify the installation to ensure it meets Australian wiring standards

If your switchboard is older or already near capacity, this is sometimes the point where an upgrade becomes worthwhile anyway — better to deal with it upfront than to find out later when something trips repeatedly under load.

Solar & Battery Integration

A growing number of EV owners are pairing their charger with solar, and in some cases battery storage, to charge largely (or entirely) off their own generation rather than the grid. This isn't automatic — it depends on your solar system's size, your battery setup if you have one, and whether you want smart/scheduled charging that prioritises solar production during the day. If you're already generating your own power, it's worth having the EV charger conversation alongside your solar setup rather than as a separate project, since planning them together avoids double-handling the switchboard and wiring work.

Three-Phase Power: Do You Have It, and Do You Need It?

Faster home charging (up to 22kW) requires three-phase power, which not every property has — particularly in rural and semi-rural areas where single-phase supply is more common. Upgrading to three-phase is possible in many cases but depends on what's available from the local network. It's worth having this checked before assuming a faster charger is on the table, since it can materially change both the cost and scope of the job.

Rural & Semi-Rural Property Considerations
